Soaring numbers of sextortion reports in France
In recent years, France has seen a rapid increase in reports related to sextortion – blackmail involving intimate photos or videos. From just a dozen cases three years ago, there were 12,000 reports filed in 2023.
This alarming trend poses a significant threat to young people on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, as well as online gaming sites.
The devastating impact on victims
Sextortion attacks are often hugely distressing for victims, causing them mental and emotional turmoil. In many cases, the attackers threaten to release sensitive content if their targets refuse to pay up or comply with other demands.
One such case involves a 17-year-old girl who faced severe depression, anxiety, self-harm, and even attempted suicide due to extortion from an online predator. The attacker demanded money and further explicit material from the victim, while also threatening to reveal her self-harming to medical professionals.
Fortunately, she found solace in confiding in a nurse, subsequently managing to block her assailant’s account. However, not all victims are able to successfully break free from their perpetrators or seek help.
Barriers to reporting incidents and filing complaints
Vulnerability, lack of trust, and fear prevent many victims from coming forward to report these crimes. Out of the 12,000 reports last year, only about 100 complaints were filed in 2023, highlighting a significant gap between reported incidents and police records.
OFMIN: Fighting against sextortion but facing challenges
OFMIN (the Office for Minors) is working hard to tackle the growing problem of sextortion. According to the head of OFMIN, Gabrielle Hazan, there has been an increase in both foreign and local perpetrators using diverse profiles.
In addition to adult sexual predators, very young offenders are now blackmailing their peers using similar methods. This makes it even more imperative for victims to avoid paying and report suspicious online activity as soon as possible.
Combatting sextortion through awareness and education
As sextortion continues to be a lucrative criminal enterprise, increased public awareness is essential in helping to prevent these incidents from occurring. Samuel Comblez, deputy director of e-Enfance, explains that most episodes occur within private spaces where teenagers are at their most vulnerable.
